Bidhya Devi Bhandari has been elected as the first women president of Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. Wife of late UML leader Madan Bhandari, Bidhya was born on June 19, 1961 in Bhojpur district. She started her early career in politics by joining as an activist in Youth wing of then Communist Party of Nepal.

She was first elected as the member of Parliament after the death of her husband. She lost the elections in 2008. However, she was appointed as the Minister of Defence in the cabinet Led by Madhav Kumar Nepal. On the second CA elections held in 2013, she became the member of CA through Proportional Representation System. After the promuglation of new constitution in 2015, She was elected as the second President of Republic of Nepal and first women President in Nepalese history.
