Gender identity refers to “one’s sense of oneself as male, female, or transgender” . When one’s gender identity and biological sex are not
congruent, the individual may identify as transsexual or as another transgender category.
It is the person's own sense and subjective experience of his/her own gender. However, gender binary approach is still prevalent in the world today. Therefore person is either masculine or feminine which is determined according to the biological determination of sex.
Gender identity defines the roles, responsibilities attitudes and behaviors of a certain gender and the society wants the individuals to fulfill their respective roles. In some societies, gender categories are open to people regardless of sex. Therefore, gender identity differs from society to society and is highly affected by social interactions.
The formation of gender can be broken into four parts which are as follows:
a) Understanding the concept of gender,
b) learning gender role standards and stereotypes
c) identifying with parents and
d) forming gender preference.

- Use of language also influences the gender identity. Some societies have gender neutral language.
